Lets Talk About Kanye

written by: DAN

You know I’ve been not writing about anything and missing out on alot of things. My emails are piling sky high and I’ve only had the time and effort to glance at them every now and - which is far too little for my glob o music. Anyways, just because I haven’t written stuff here in awhile doesn’t mean I haven’t been listening to music… and there has been some good music out as of late. For now, lets talk about Kanye West.

Kanye West - Graduation Kanye West - Graduation
released September 11, 2007

I have listened to very little of Kanye West before this album. I had heard his stuff… I even think I’ve had one of his albums but never gave him a listen. Why? Well, I didn’t think it was all that good and I kept seeing him all over the press. He shot to stardom in like 2005 to know range and has taken advantage of the press the whole time. He’s done and said some stupid things but doesn’t everybody? So once I heard a little bit of his new album Graduation in my friends car I knew I had to get it. First and foremost, “Stronger” is a rad song. Once I heard Daft Punks sampling of Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger I knew I had to hear more. Most people don’t even know he sampled Daft Punks track which kind of sucks but that’s why I’m here to update you a little bit. After I listened to that like way too many times I decided to listen to the rest of the album. I came to the conclusion, “Wow, the whole album is really really good.”

From the other single “Good Life (featuring T-Pain)” to “Everything I Am,” “Homecoming (featuring Chris Martin),” “Big Brother,” “I Wonder.”… they are all good. I will say that in my opinion Kanye isn’t much of a raper per se. He and his dj lay down sick tracks but his rapping kind of lacks. I think this album is a huge success for his career and an overall really good album but if he can smooth out his rapping skills I think the next one will be even bigger.

Not many new releases, yet AFI dvd is out

written by: DAN

I Heard a VoiceNormally today I might mention some new releases, yet today I’m not all that interested in any of them. Pretty slow release day in my opinion… except for maybe Ghostface Killah. All well, yet I did want to mention the release of the AFI I Heard a Voice DVD released today. It was filmed at their largest headlining show to date with 22 HD cameras which is pretty rediculous. I mention this because I was at that show, right to the left of the sound/camera booth on the floor. It was rediculous how many people were there and how over the top and huge it was. You can read my full review here.

This DVD is packed with 72 minutes of live footage. Perfect for all you AFI fans. Give yourself a Christmas present.

The Killers - Sams Town
The Killers - Sam’s Town

The Information
Beck - The Information

The Crane Wife
The Decemberists - The Crane Wife

Jet - Shine On
Jet - Shine On Pitchfork, hahaha

There is actually a huge list of releases today - I only mentioned a few that I have been paying attention to. I don’t have a nice amazon link, Cities is releasing their Variations ep that is good. Head here for words and mp3’s.

Of course there has been enough of The Killers all over the place the last month +. Now it might be coming to a close. I must say from my first couple listens, Sam’s Town is no Hot Fuss, yet all new and all good.

Here’s a list of a few releases out yesterday. There was plenty of good stuff posted yesterday like an exclusive interview with HEALTH and my show review of Mew.

The Freezing Atlantic Aberdeen City - The Freezing Atlantic
The funny thing about this album that I don’t understand - It came out in November 2005, as I wrote here. I’ve been listening to this album for a long time, and now they are getting all kinds of publicity, tours, attention and whatnot. That’s great for them, I just wonder what the change is. Grab an MP3 and tour schedule at The Tripwire.

The Truth La Rocca - The Truth
For words and mp3’s - head here.

Under the Iron Sea Keane - Under the Iron Sea
More on Keane here and here.

Dirty…

Waterloo to Anywhere Dirty Pretty Things - Waterloo to Anywhere

Actually their EP came out, but whatever.

There is of course all kinds of other stuff that came out… search and enjoy - New Music Tipsheet.

Rock Kills Kid - Are You Nervous

written by: DAN

Are You Nervous? As I mentioned here I picked up the Rock Kills Kid debut album Are You Nervous? That was Thursday, I have been listening to it non-stop all the way till, well right now Monday morning. I had no idea that buying this album would easily be thrown into my top 10 this year. There isn’t a song on the album that doesn’t grab my attention and make me want to listen. The first two tracks on the album, “Paralyzed” and “Hideaway” are by far their most popular songs - super catchy - but what of the rest of the album? Every track is unique with Jeff Tuckers amazing vocals. I read awhile back in some magazine how he used to live wherever he could find a place to sleep and just write songs. The article mentioned he had somewhere around 100 stacked up before RKK. I was then talking to a guy at Amoeba who was asking me how it sounds - I told him pop rock, real catchy; yet I would have to add after listening to the whole album melodic and introspective. Amoeba dude was also telling me how Jeff used to sleep on couchs all over and how the name of his band was to be “Jeff Tucker quartet” or something. I don’t quite remember… dang.

My favorite tracks on the album are “Back To Life,” “Don’t Want To Stay,” “Hope Song,” and the singles that I mentioned before. Their sound isn’t just Alternative or Rock, but they throw in a bit of Electronica to get you dancing. Honestly, I think Rock Kills Kid has the potential to be big, like The Killers big. That may be a crazy thing to say to some of you, but I think it could happen. I highly recommend this album if you like Phoenix, The Killers, Maximo Park, The Rakes, well, I really just say you should buy this album.

Keane - Hopes and Fears

written by: DAN
Keane Hopes and Fears

Monday morning rolls around, how about a little review of an album I’ve really been enjoying recently? With all the goodness of the new Keane album Under the Iron Sea I picked up the last Keane album to get some bearings. I’m a newer fan, and havn’t know the beauty rock of Keane until the last couple months. If you are like me, and really start to like an artist, you start to get everything old/new/live that they have put out. I mentioned the latest single Is It Any Wonder that I can’t get enought of. Keane falls into the same rock category as David Gray, David Ford, maybe even Coldplay. How else can I describe it except as beautiful rock. Easy listening at all times… pretty much just like Coldplay.

This album is upbeat - happy - and has alot of recognizable songs. If I was to pick times of day to listen to this album, this is definately morning and just-getting-dark time. Well, pretty much anytime it’s sunny outside. If you are into bands like Coldplay, the Fray, David Gray, David Ford, you better add Keane to that list.

Cut Chemist-The Audience’s Listening

written by: randall

This is the debut album from J5’s Cut Chemist released yesterday. I acutally didn’t hear any tracks from the album until the release event they had at Star Shoes last night in Hollywood. I am not too savy on hip-hop, so I am going to be straight foward in this review. This album is straight up groovy. That is the only way to describe it. The Audience’s Listening is a perfect example of how anyone with turntables, a mixer, a computer, and talent can make an incredible album. The beats seem pretty original and extremely catchy. I found myself singing the beats in my head all day after just one listen. This album is definately worth the $14 you would spend on it. Even if you ain’t cool with hip-hop I think most would be with this album.

The Futureheads - News and Tributes

written by: DAN
The Futureheads

New album and tracks by The Futureheads! The track “Skip To The End” is quite catchy, and by catchy it’s stuck in my head. The Futureheads aren’t new to the UK (their home) or US soil, yet they are new to Startime / Vagrant records. I’ve been hearing/seeing the buzz for these guys the last couple weeks for their release of News and Tributes out on June 13. They have a pretty fat tour coming up, and wouldn’t you know it the Tapes N’ Tapes every music bloggers favorite band is on the bill. 3hive has alot more words than I do right now about the good ol Futureheads, read here.
