I haven’t heard “The B-52′s” in years. Do you remember singing along to that one song right…? LOVE SHACK BABY YA LOVE SHACK or something like that. Anyways, I mildly shocked to find out they are coming out with a new album this month. “FUNPLEX” is due out March 25th and it’s being marketed as “the first record of the 21st century from The B-52s!” hahah awesome. Lets get one thing straight, I’m young, I remember listening to them when I was 15 or so… who knows. “Love Shack” practically always played on the radio and I watched the video a handful of times. I remember thinking they looked kinda old then so you know they’ve aged a bit more over the past 10 + years… but they’re back in the game! I say good for them and I’m sure they still have a large fan base.

Here’s a quote for good measure on the album,

“It’s loud, sexy rock and roll, with the beat pumped up to hot pink,” says guitarist Keith Strickland.

The only problem I have with that quote is the “sexy” part. I’m sorry that I’m not sorry but those chicks are old, and I’m not a cougar hunter.

One last note, there is a REMIX EP out that I’ll try to get my hands on soon featuring CSS, Peaches and Scissor Sisters.

To pre-order: Head HERE

Obviously I’ve been on a blogging hiatus for the past I don’t even know how many months. I’ll be honest, I got burned out. A few other opportunities came my way and I decided to take them and let my music blogging passion slip by the way side.

I apologize to all the readers, bands, media editors for my lack of responding to your emails. I have rarely checked for the past months and am quite stressed to wonder how many unread emails I have.

THE FUTURE:
There is still a future for musicglob. This has been my hobby and passion for over 2 years and I love all the bands and people I’ve met. It’s been an amazing time and it’s not over yet. I have all kinds of plans for this website and I’m going to put a tentative deadline for 2008. In all reality new musicglob will be up and running later in January 2008.

It’s just the way it goes on the internet and in life, sometimes you can’t stick with things – even if you love them.

Thanks again and have a great Holiday season and I’ll see you all in 2008. Oh yeah it’s going to be a good one. You know how I know, I just turned 23 on the 23rd this month… going to be my golden year so get a little bit excited, but not too excited.

So I keep forgetting to bring my new music with me from home so I can listen at work – and sometimes put up a post if I have the extra time. Sorry folks. I have some great stuff that I’ll be sharing very soon. This week was a bit hectic for me and school projects.

On to my other topic – Jim Carrey’s Celebrity playlist on iTunes. It’s up because it’s a promo for his new movie The Number 23 which looks both awesome and creepy. Therefore I will go see it. He has some artists on his list I wouldn’t guess. For instance Broken Social Scene and She Wants Revenge. Who am I really to judge though. But the track that takes the cake Jim Carrey’s “I Am the Walrus.” What does he have to say about the track?

“I Am the Walrus” (Track 23): ‘Well I am.”

To check out the whole playlist – click here (will open iTunes)

It’s the first of the month. Awesome. I wasn’t able to post up yesterday cause I had a bunch of stuff to do for my classes and today I’m just gonna do like a “my thoughts right now” kinda thing.

New Bloc Party album tickles my fancy
I don’t mean that in a gay way even though he did officially come out early January. I’m really okay with it all. I think it’s great in fact. Anyways back to the album – there is nothing I don’t like about it. To clarify that, it’s a really inspirational and amazing album for myself. As compared to “Silent Alarm” it is more melodic and beautiful. It definately seems like they took their time with it. It’s been well over two years since “Silent Alarm” and I’m really happy that this is finally out.

Green Tea is awesome
I’ve been sick since last weekend and have been enjoying an obscene amount of vitamins and drugs along with many different kinds of green tea. I havn’t found my favorite yet out of the 3 or 4 I’ve tried. Anybody have a tea they absolutely love? Packets or the leafy kind is all good. I was thinking about dropping a bunch of money on Adagio Teas cause there is so many to choose from.

Young Love
<strike>Tonight I am heading to the Knitting Factory to see Young Love.</strike> I didn’t go. I’ve been watching and listening and dancing Young Love for the last 6 + months and it’s been pretty exciting. These guys are definately going to blow up into the public spotlight now and for the next couple months.
More on Young Love in the MusicGlob archives

Thats all for now – leave comments, I want to talk to the readers.

2006 I would say in my opinion not a good year for music. Here are my reasons. I still to this day can not remember a new incredible band that really came out with a full length. The closest was TV on the Radio (not a new band) – Return to Cookie Mountain, which was very disappointing when I saw them live with Massive Attack. Paris Hilton released an album. The fucking dude from Lord of the Rings thinks he’s a DJ now and we are getting celebrity bullshit DJs all across LA now. Major labels now misuse the word Indie as a genre in order to try and make their bands more hip and marketable, example 44 plus or what ever their name is. Travis Barker is a very bad influence for dudes over 35, who think a Mohawk and riding a dirt bike will make them look younger. I will admit it does work on the less intelligent of women under the age of 25. Everything this year has been all about mediocre generic indie “blog” type bands. This results in ½ ass music being pushed all through the universe. As a result this year CMJ did not even have any good bands on the bill. Shoegaze has officially evolved now to a genre of pop punk played 1/4 speed with a delay pedal. No great melodies or tones involved anymore. Ex-mall-punk bands now try to evolve into this ,example the dude from the Ataris and Tom of Blink 182. PLEASE I would like to here a decent Shoegaze band! The closest I could even find which, by the way is an incredible band and did release a new album this year, is The Radio Dept. They are going a bit more electronic but none the less an incredible group. They are also featured on the Marie Antoinette Soundtrack which is definitely the best thing put out in 2006 even though it is a soundtrack. I honestly think Sophia made this movie just so she could put out another killer soundtrack. Now there is a celebrity DJ that needs to show Frodo or whatever his name is what’s up. Also on another good note David Yow from the Jesus Lizard is singing again in Qui,a band from out here that rocks really really hard. I would suggest going to see them tomorrow night at Safari Sams in Hollywood. Also there is an interview with Qui coming up shortly. That’s about it. I know the new Stooges Album is coming out in March and Steve Albini is doing it. I already know what is going to be the best album of 2007.

I never thought that CNN, the Cable News Network would get into something like this, I mean they are NEWS, right? I really don’t know how I feel about this whole thing but the quiz was kinda fun.

Late last week I received an “Advance DMCA Request” from the good ol Web Sheriff. You know the web sheriff is “protecting your rights on the internet.” This isn’t the first I have received. A while back I got one for the Yo Lo Tengo album coming out. The best part about that one, THERE WAS A SPELLLING ERROR. I thought to myself, why should I follow a “legal request” when it has a spelling error? I havn’t and probably won’t post any yo lo tengo, sorry. Don’t get me wrong about why I won’t post; I won’t post because I received the request in the first place. I don’t want some kind of warning threat with the band and label posted all over it. In fact it makes me not want to support either of them at all.

On with this new advance DMCA request, I figure I’ll share it with you.

THE SHINS – Wincing The Night Away

 Hi,

This is simply to let you know that WEB SHERIFF represents SUBPOP RECORDS INC. and that this label will be releasing THE SHINS’ new album “WINCING THE NIGHT AWAY” on a worldwide basis.

Obviously, it would be greatly appreciated by both the artist and the label if you could refrain from hosting or linking to pirate files of “WINCING THE NIGHT AWAY” or any tracks from the album.

The label and artist have asked for WEB SHERIFF to help protect this release from piracy by way of 24-7 surveillance and enforcement and, as such, civil and / or criminal legal actions could, regrettably, result if these files are offered for download or streaming without the permission of the label.

Many thanks in advance for respecting this artist’s creation / copyrights

Naturally and notwithstanding the above, all rights of SUBPOP RECORDS INC., the RIAA, the BPI and the IFPI remain strictly reserved : please excuse this required formality.

 With thanks & regards,

 WEB SHERIFF
(Enforcement Team)

You know what REALLY annoys me about this email?? It came to my old MusicGlob email address and from PPWEB3@aol.com with no senders name. WTF? This email comes down to one thing, they are accusing me of being a pirate and a thief. Neither of which am I, except maybe on halloween and when I take money from friends that I might pay back. I purchase music, I go to alot of shows, I write about bands. How much more support do you want?

So what next? A scar on SubPops’ and The Shins name in my mind, and probably everybody that I may talk to when The Shins come up. It sucks I know, I’m sure they just want to protect their music or something but what about years ago when The Shins didn’t get big from Garden State. As for SubPop, I still love your bands.

Tell me your thoughts…

The Web Sheriff responds, check out the comments.

Today is Thursday and there’s just soooo many things to write about, I guess.

For instance, the Pitchfork drinking game – covered on idolator and stereogum and orginally MW Blog. Definately the hot commodity today.

Another “hot” story today is the “Capitol Controversy.” Basically Capitol employees don’t like their CEO/President Andy Slater and say he’s doing a shit job. Can I say one thing, I don’t give a care. The only reason it’s worth a read is because it’s kinda funny. Such travesties within a huge label? Who knew. If you want to know more about what the employees think and core artists and blah blah blah, original article by Page Six. Also idolator and stereogum again.

So we all write about the same thing? I think I just did, now I’m part of “the machine.” By “we all” I’m simply referring to music bloggers in general even though there are many different types. I feel so used.

On another note, do any of you bloggers get a little pissed when you see something on a “more popular blog” that you wrote about way before they did? For instance, I read stereogum all the time and love it. Yet they will get more credit for posting David Hasselhoffs “jump in my car” video earlier this week YET I posted that up 3 months ago in July here. In fact here’s other HOFF videos to piss yourself too. I’m just jealous I guess, but with blogger fame comes all kinds of responsibility. WHAT, blogger fame? Yep, come on.. you know all the popular music blogs by name, and Pitchfork is god. Why can’t I be a XM radio host and be known by all at South By Southwest and get sent “cool new mp3 players.” Oh yeah, I know why I can’t – because my writing is shit (according to some) and “everything is too promotional.”

So who wrote the rules on blogging? Oh yeah, I think it’s write what you want to write, it’s a blog dammit. Now that I’m done with my tangents, go listen to The Presets

Most of the time I love Apple, and the only time I hate them is when they release something I really want. Which is 90% of the time. Take for instance the release of the new iPod Nano this week. I purchased the Nano the moment it came out, 4gb black and great. Now there are a few changes, better battery life (supposedly 24 hours); brighter screen (40% brighter); and the most notable – 8GB of space. That last part gets me good, I mean COME ON, I want 8gb in my Nano. They changed the design back to the rounded edges of the orginial Mini from a year or two back which I’m not so sure I like. At least the prices arn’t so bad $150, $200, and $250 for 2gb, 4gb, and 8gb.

Now onto what I will call “The Clip” – or why didn’t they just name it the iClip?! The new shuffle is pretty cool looking. 1GB which they estimate to 240 songs for $80 isn’t all that bad. Perfect for running or just having “the worlds smallest music player” can be handy in many situations. The days of covering your portable cd player in your backpack ended long ago. It’s still hard to cover up the headphone wires – which is why we need wireless in ear head phones to be super sneaky with your music listening. The only downside to me is no more using it as a USB key/hard drive which was one of the selling points for me and the older shuffle.

Ohhhh the Zune. Doesn’t it just look pretty for a Microsoft product? Those guys really started getting better designers since the Xbox and also their new operating system, Vista. I myself have yet to hold a Zune, yet it looks overall impressive. My only objection is because it’s Microsoft, and that means you have to use special software and it’s completely hung around that mentality for every Microsoft product to work with every other Microsoft product even when you don’t want it to. Anyways, go ahead and check out what other music bloggers have said about the Zune, here on an engadget post.

After my trip to the UK I was a little disappointed in Brit’s taste in music. Like what Smurtis said “The Brits think The Arctic Monkeys are better than the Beatles and The Rolling Stones combined”. This video of the lead singer of Panic at the Disco! getting hit in the face by a bottle at the Reading festival made my day. Even the Euros think he’s a douche. Come on you have the word disco in you band. Just for that you should expect to get shit thrown at you.
