Girl Talk and Kevin Devine, huh?

written by: DAN

Today is an odd treat. Two groups, two completely different specturms of music. Why do I do this? Cause. I’ve got some acoustic by Kevin Devine and if you havn’t heard of Girl Talk by now you might be living under a rock. It’s okay if you are, but soon you won’t be.

Kevin Devine Kevin Devine is a Brooklyn musician with a guitar and a band. Easy sounds, reminds me of Postal Service, but not. Also maybe some Gus Black. He is playing shows all around the country, incuding tomorrow in LA at the Hotel Cafe.

Maximo Park

Maximo Park

Maximo Park is a bunch of dudes from Newcastle Upon Tyne, United Kingdom. As I’ve said many times before, music from the UK is awesome, another example – The Rakes. Maximo Park isn’t new per se as they blew up back in February and around that time. I just felt like writing about them because I’ve been listening to their EP/ Single Apply Some Pressure. They have released a slew of singles, and one album “A Certain Trigger.” One quick note, I love their cover art and “branding” of the band. Just look at their discography page.

Maximo Park makes catchy rock. Sounds like … well any rock that stays stuck in your head. Currently they are playing shows in Europe.

Silversun Pickups

written by: DAN
Silversun Pickups

Los Angeles locals Silversun Pickups are a fresh breath in rock music. Every song seems so carefully crafted and melodic. Its like brooding rock music, but not the depressed brooding; more like the “in deep thought” brooding. I think it’s cause of the heavy guitar… Their album Carnavas comes out July 25 and I’ve had the pleasure of listening to advances of the album and I really can’t find anything wrong or negative to say about it. Its a great album for all the indie fans that want something beautiful to listen too.

Hot Chip

written by: DAN
Hot Chip

Hot Chip is obviously hot.
Great songs since 2001, well released songs.

We started making music because we were bored with alot of other music. We loved the idea of ‘pop’ music but not the people who make ‘pop’ music now.
- Hot Chip

I can’t argue with that.
Sorry… not much of a writer today… yet Hot Chip will work it for you. Listen if you like anything electronic, poppy… and well here is there Myspace genre: Reggaeton / Bluegrass / Turntablism. That’s awesome.

The Gaskets

Gaskets

The dudes in the Gaskets make some perfect summertime music. It’s catchy, it’s dancable, it’s fun and awesome. From Richmond Virginia they released an album not too long ago by the name “Loose Change” Nice review right here. What else can I really say… uhh … it’s radical electronica rock.

As Fast As

written by: DAN
As Fast As

Since I first heard about As Fast As a month or so ago I seem to hear about them more and more. I’ve heard them at least once a week on Sirius and they even got a sick setup touring with Morningwood and The Lashes. They have some incredibly catchy songs like “Florida Sunshine.” They have hints of classic rock mixed with new indie rock sounds. For instance, it would be awesome to have them playing super loud off of vinyl on a Saturday bar-b-que. At least thats how I can mazimize my enjoyment of this band. Thanks to bio’s I can cut and paste things like this to give you a better idea of the band.

2 cups The Beatles
1 cup The Who
1 cup Elvis Costello and the Attractions
1/2 cup Led Zeppelin
1 tablespoon Weezer
1/2 cup The Kinks
1 teaspoon Stevie Wonder
a dash of mid 90’s Seattle sensibility
1 case premium beer
4 wiseasses from the sticks

bake for 1 1/2 years
VOILA!
AS FAST AS!

… and there ya have it.

The Lovemakers

written by: DAN
The Lovemakers

This morning I pull up the music library and The Lovemakers called my name. The Lovemakers make sexually energized dance rock. It’s awesome. “Shake That Ass” is a fun song, and especially the remix “Shake That 50 Cent (50 Cent vs. The Lovemakers)” Their latest album Times of Romance came out last year and is filled with all kinds of good tracks. They are currently out playing some shows here on the west coast and from what I’ve heard they are a band to see live. Even their bio has a bit…

Their live show was recently described by a (possibly intoxicated) audience member in their native Oakland, California as “a pink Ferrari driving through a mountain of coke.” [source]

Just for that quote, I really want to see them live.

Make sure to head over to their audio visual page for sexy videos and pictures.

The Golden Republic

written by: DAN
The Golden Republic

Just recently I was listening to party shuffle in iTunes, and I landed on an awesome rock song by The Golden Republic. I don’t know how I got this song in the first place, yet I love it and this band. They market themselves as “indie-meets-glam.” That works for me, but when I think of glam I think of bands like Motley Crue and the like, which is not The Golden Republic. Formerly known as The People they released an album, then signed by Astralwerks in 2004 and released an EP back in September. They have a good ol rock sound that we all need every once in awhile.

Thom Yorke

written by: DAN
Thom Yorke

By now, if you read blogs or even consider yourself a person who likes Radiohead, you know that Thom Yorke has finished his solo album The Eraser. Pretty much I’ve seen a couple of the usual opinions. It sucks, or it’s okay. [read a bunch here] I’m not here with an opion. UHH, yeah actually I am because I started this blog in the first place… but I like the solo stuff. It’s very experiemental, (Did you expect something else?) and reminds me of Amnesiac. Electronic and brooding at times, and you still can’t really understand the lyrics like I said in my review of Radiohead – OK Computer.

It’s beautiful in the Thom Yorke way. Not the Radiohead way. This is Thom branching out and doing something creative on his own, and from what I’ve heard it inspiring work. I’m terribly fond of “Harrowdown Hill,” and “Black Swan.”

Under The Influence Of Giants

written by: DAN
Under The Influence Of Giants

I’ve currently been enjoying the 70′s rock sounds of Under The Influence of Giants. I “dig it” you could say. With a self titled album coming out this summer (August) I forsee these guys as becoming quite the pop hit. One other great thing I’ve found out about them is they are signed by Island, whom I really like. I leave you with a bit from their bio on Myspace.

What do a wizard, a tumble weed and a pair of floaties have in common? Nothing. The genesis of UTIOG was created with three young ex calibers: Aaron Dick Bruno, Jamin John Wilcox and Drew (middle name confidential) Stewart.

I love it when bands have wit and good music to go along with each other; their photos are great too.

The Sky Drops

written by: DAN
The Sky Drops

The Sky Drops, listen and you will feel. Heavy guitars in “Now Would Be” spirals me into a calm psychedelic state. There is nothing overly complex about the songs, yet they just grab your attention. Reminds me of the Smashing Pumpkins in some ways; I think because of the heavy guitars and calm vocals from both Rob and Monika that just bond. Check them out and I’m sure you will be refreshed and pleased.

Side note, I love their press photos of them in the field because their music and photos seem to mesh so perfectly together. Artistic and beautiful.

Mystery Jets

I have just recently fell upon the Mystery Jets and they are a great UK band. From what I’ve found out, they have become increasingly popular from their remix of Bloc Party’s “Pioneers” (thanks to Dreams Of Horses and Myspace) and also their song “You Can’t Fool Me Dennis.” They have released a track for their latest EP You CanÂ’t Fool Me Dennis, titled “Lizzies Lion.” Great track and I hope to pick up this EP soon. Blonde Redhead

Blonde Redhead has been around for some years now, and yet I have just come across them this past year. The album, Misery Is a Butterfly caught my attention. Great album that strikes me as erie, yet all the more intriguing. Her voice soothes me, let it soothe you.

That was a creepy sentance, and I’m not feeling like writing better. huh?

The Killers

written by: DAN
The Killers

I’m in the mood for some Las Vegas music since I’m heading out there tonight for a weekend of fun. What more popular band has come out of Las Vegas recently than The Killers? (please correct me if i’m wrong) I remember 2 years ago I guess it is now when they took a rocket to fame. It started out for me watching “Somebody told me” on college tv which is now mtvU. Then before their album came out in June 2004 I was able to go see them live in San Diego with other headliners the Yeah Yeah Yeahs. AMAZING show. They were still new to the whole fame thing, it was a smaller venue and just great overall. Now they sell out in like 20 minutes or whatever.

I believe they are back in the studio working on a new album. They have a new website up which is usually another sign of new stuff coming out.
