The Televangelist + The Architect

written by: DAN
The Televangelist + The Architect

The Televangelist + The Architect is a three piece from Cambridge, MA who are truly unique. Very artistic, precise and real. Maybe it’d because two of the members are Phd students at MIT. Beautiful lyrics paired with keyboards as well as guitar and drums. This band makes me think of two bands in particular - At the Drive In and The Arcade Fire. You may ask why? - they are different kinds of music. I say that because these bands push the norm and seemingly themselves. To me they just care about the music and the next piece they can create.

The Sunshine Underground

written by: DAN
The Sunshine Underground

The Sunshine Underground is what I’ve been wanting to hear lately, and what I keep not writing about. Something fast, something a little dance ish, more just rock. They are from Leeds, UK and all you oversees sould be happy since they are touring October - November. Sucks for all of us in the states because they sound like a band you need to see live. For now they have videos strewn across their myspace as well as YouTube. Then again you can always just listen.

Jeremy Enigk

Jeremy Enigk

I felt it was appropriate to talk about Jeremy Enigk since his debut second (thanks Devon in the comments and I’m an idiot) album was released today titled World Waits. If you didn’t know, this album is amazing. Already deemed to be in top 10 lists and everybody including myself loves the beautiful melodies and lyrics. Previously the singer of Sunny Day Real Estate and The Fire Theft this is his first solo album and seems like its going to keep getting better. By the way, pronounce his last name e-nihk and he’s setup shot in Seattle, Washington.. You’ll sound so much cooler when you tell your friends about him.

Check is Myspace for tour dates.
UPDATE 10/19 - Stream the whole album on AOL Music

Grizzly Bear

Grizzly Bear

I was supposed to see Grizzly Bear the other week, yet if you remember Holy Shit was displeasing and I left. From what I’ve been hearing lately I should have suffered through it to check out Grizzly Bear. So their new album Yellow House is mellow, but supposedly the live shows are to be sought after. My Bad. So I’ve been checking out their stuff recently, I’ll have to go with the crowd on saying the new stuff is pretty quite, yet good nontheless. I really like a few tracks off of Horn of Plenty especially the remixes. Grab the tracks below and try out for yourself, then go see them live, they are touring all through October and November.

Canada

Canada

I think it is my duty to let you know a few things. For one, the band Canada is not from Canada, yet Michigan. Two, there is seven people in the band; that is enough to start a small neighborhood. Third, they play feel good folk music. Lots of instruments, lots of sound, decent enough vocals. Violin, horn, guitar, drums… all blending to create an atmosphere to each song. I think that is what makes them unique. As far as the “sounds like” catagory, they are folkpop. How about you tell me what they sound like?

The Oohlas

Today The Oohlas release Best Stop Pop, an incredibly fun indie pop album. I don’t really know if indie pop is even anything, but why not. This Los Angeles based trio put together a fun album for any listening occasion. On a side note, I just like to say their name out loud, you should try it out. OOOOhlaaaaasss.

Anyways, big record release party tonight at Cinespace sponsored by PINK IS THE NEW BLOG. If you don’t read Trents celebrity gossip blog, you should. I’ll be there, it’s 21 + and FREE!!

8mm

written by: DAN
8mm

This is a band that I’ve been holding onto for awhile now. 8mm is husband - wife combo Sean and Juliette Beavan from Los Angeles CA. Songs to Love & Die By is their debut album and is simply beautiful. The album really is filled with songs to love and die by. It’s a combination of somber and seductive love songs that slip into your head and fill you with emotion. Sean is no newbie to the music industry. He has mixed/produced records by Nine Inch Nails, No Doubt, Thrice, and Marilyn Manson to name a few.

The album comes out tomorrow, and it is simply an addictive, beautiful album. Make sure to listen to the mp3’s below, especially “Stunning.”

Mezzanine Owls

Mezzanine Owls

I’ve been reading more and more recently about the Mezzanine Owls and how everybody loves them. It’s all true. The Mezzanine Owls are an LA band that finished up recording their debut album Slingshot Echos which I think will be set for release later this year. You could call it shoegaze, some pop, but really just always worth listening. Reminds me a bit of another LA band, Silversun Pickups. and too many other things. I first heard of them via The TripWire who has some great words about the album and the band.

Roger O’Donnell

Roger O'Donnell

This past week I caught up with emails and news and whatnot from when I was gone of vacation; I suppose that’s good so I can continue blogging for you and only you. Soo, do you know who Roger O’Donnell is? If yes, he would be the keyboardist for The Cure. Wait, never heard of The Cure - you are probably eleventeen, so go get some. If you answered “no” above - I guess I just told you. Sorry, enough incessant blabbering… Roger O’Donnell is releasing a whole album that he just made with his Moog Voyager. Other artists are getting some inspiration from Roberts work and remixing themself. It’s all beautiful and exciting.

Ben Swift

written by: DAN

New artist (to me) that just went solo. Introducing Ben Swift. He released his solo album, Pull earlier this year that he put together in his studio in Western Massachusetts. Calm and compelling - you know, the usual acoustic stuff. You will like if a fan of Gus Black, David Ford, Kevin Devine, maybe even some James Blunt or Jack Johnson…

Great track, pick it up and listen. Sorry I don’t have much more info on him, hard to find!

Von Iva

I coudn’t really help myself when I listend to Von Iva, then went digging to find more information on them and find they are a bunch of cute chicks rocking out. Especially rocking out in their panties. So there you have it, some of you like me are a little hesitant at “girl rock” but I’ve always thought 2006 was the year of the chick singer and chick band, and it has. Rocket is another super cute girl band.

Pick up some Von Iva and set your feet free.

Ima Robot

written by: DAN
Ima Robot

I just thought I’d bring up IMA ROBOT because their latest album is to be released this upcoming Tuesday. (September 12) For awhile now I’ve considered them rad, yet didn’t have a chance to see them live. You are in luck, they are playing on September 12 at Safari Sams in Hollywood. The best part about Ima Robot, is how much they make me (and you) want to party and dance. They have this infectious quality - singing along with their songs while driving to work, or having your own dance party.

Here’s your basic facts: Ima Robot is: Alex Ebert (Vokals) Filip Nikolic a.k.a. Turbotito (Face) Scott Devours (Drums, Ukulele) Timmy “The Terror” Anderson (Guitar, Flutes) Andy Marlow (Korg Triton VS Expanded 350 extra torque weighted vibrato keys), based in Los Angeles, and ready to release their second album, Monument to the Masses.

Check out the video for “Creeps Me Out.”
It’s a buncha people dancing, what you should be doing.

She, Sir

written by: DAN
She, Sir

I introduce you to some new music from Austin, Texas, She, Sir. Three guys, three years in the making, and now “Who Can’t Say Yes” out this fall. I was able to get a mini interview from the band so we could all take a closer look into the band, the album, and the Austin music scene. Read some more, and pick up a couple mp3’s below.

DAN: Tell me a little bit more about the album. You mentioned it has taken around 3 years to get everything together, how was that experience?

M. Grusha She, Sir: Long and tedious. First it was a matter of finishing school. Then we attempted to record an EP in Minneapolis, but we ended up shelving the problem due to production concerns. After all the time and money we have put into this, it feels great to finally have the CDs in hand.

DAN: What were some of the influences that went into the creation of this album and all your music?

M. Grusha She, Sir: Brian Wilson was a huge influence on the recording and creative process. A lot of bands have influenced the way that we view sound: My Bloody Valentine, the Cocteau Twins, Echo & the Bunnymen, and the Zombies, to name a few.

DAN: How is the Austin music scene? Any local bands you guys into?

M. Grusha She, Sir: Despite having lived here a full year, we haven’t had much time to take in the local scene. We’re still complete newcomers here. Of the acts we *have* seen, we really enjoyed For Those Who Know, Ringo Deathstarr, and the Black Angels.

DAN: What is your favorite album(s) right now?

M. Grusha She, Sir: “Pet Sounds” by the Beach Boys

DAN: Favorite thing to do in Austin? Any places to make sure and visit?

M. Grusha She, Sir: We’ve had a ton of great food in Austin. There’s an abundance of quality restaurants and music venues. If I had one minor complaint, it would be that Austin seems to be lacking in terms of African cuisine. I’m hoping that this next year will afford us more leisure time to see the sights.
