if all goes according to plan

written by: DAN

I will have a new version of musicglob up including some new features and some ideas for a blog/review series.
Until then, have a good Labor day weekend. Enjoy some beer and sunshine or whatever makes you relax.

update tuesday early morning…
Well, since it was a holiday and all I reverted to laziness I didn’t finish the new version of the site. It not like it really matters anyways since I haven’t been posting much. Hopefully that’ll change soon.

A Shoreline Dream

written by: DAN
A Shoreline Dream

I’ve admitted in the past and I’ll admit it right now… If you have album artwork that catches my attention like A Shoreline Dreams did, I will listen to your music and I will b extremely happy when I end up liking it like I do now. I apologize for the run on sentences, it’s just what I do. I first heard of A Shoreline Dream around the time they released their first album voiding The Consequences which had some good tracks on it. Their COASTAL EP that came out in the end of July is a sea gem. Mine as well stick with the sea/landscape imagery that the music begs of you. Every track is a methodical and melodic journey if you let yourself have one. I’ve been reading melodipsych is what people are calling these tracks. I didn’t actually know that was a style but it works, just listen and you’ll see. You must buy this album in stores because the album artwork is amazing and the music is right there along with it.

Junior Senior

Junior Senior

My poor glob has been neglected recently. Like an old friend I lost touch with. The glob is coming back, lots of things in the works. In between now and then, LETS DANCE!!!

Junior Senior just released their latest album the other week titled Hey Hey My My Yo Yo. It’s off the hook. Full of dope beats and tracks that make you have fun even when you think you can’t. It’s got the disco vibe to it at times and for whatever reason that makes me think of Boogie Nights. Remember the part in the car with Mark Wahlberg aka DIRK… you know the part right? Well this album isn’t like that. HA sorry to stick that visual in your head. That had nothing to do with anything. Really though this album is awesome, awesome to the max. If you want more info on these guys, you know where to look.

Current TV - The Daily Fix

written by: DAN

I just heard the Current TV has a new six times daily music show. It’s more or less the first music blog on tv. It’ll feature all kinds of stuff from people like you and me… you know “user generated content” such as camera phone pictures, photos, etc. It’s 90 seconds long and will be focusing on emerging (gotta love that word) artists from all genres from hip hop to rock and so on.

It first aired on Wednesday but I just heard about it today, any of you seen it? You’ll have to check to see if you have Current TV. If you have digital cable then most likely. I like to watch it every now and then to catch so good “pods” as they like to call them It’s one of the coolest TV stations that I’ve watched… probably because it’s aimed at the 18 - 34 year old market and I fall right in there.

Lightbreak

written by: DAN
Lightbreak

I saw Lightbreak way back in July upstairs at the Roxy before this show was getting started and I was floored. These four guys from Oregon make perfect indie pop songs. Lead vocalist Chris Bevan performed with such sincerity and control that I knew this was a band I needed to remember. After hearing just a couple songs you’ll see that they have potential to do whatever they want. I am really into this band because I really like any rock band that incorporates a piano well. It adds a new level of sound to make their popish love songs what they are, beautiful, inspiring, and heartfelt… but still rocks. I thought I should add that last part to make sure you know.

They have a 4-song EP out titled Andalucia and I’ve been streaming it from their myspace page frequently. It’s way good and all kinds of catchy.

The Lovemakers: Misery Loves Company

The new Lovemakers EP is way good and they have released videos for every song on the EP. The Misery Loves Company video above is extremely creepy which is exactly what makes it awesome. You must watch. I’m stoked to catch them next week in San Diego. Check out their myspace for dates.

Cary Brothers

written by: DAN
Cary Brothers

Well crafted, beautiful, and simply perfect pop album is just one sentence I could write about Cary Brothers. new album Who You Are. I caught wind of the album just recently (like last month - album was out 05/29/07) and it’s been one of those albums I just want to listen to. You may remember his song “Blue Eyes” in the film Garden State way back in 2005 directed/written/starring college friend Zach Braff. Brothers wrote the song years previous to Garden State yet it is now back in the spotlight - but only on the album with bonus tracks. This album’s single, “Who You Are” is a treasure. He said it took him about a year and half to get this album done and we should all be happy he took his time. Every track beautifully written and sung by him laced with piano and melodies that make you want to sing along. I’ll leave you on a quote from Brothers,

“The songs are pop, but not built-for-radio pop songs,” Brothers explains. “I like melodies that grow, songs that have more than one meaning. Radio songs have the big hook at the beginning, then they hammer that into your head for the next three minutes, instead of letting the song grow slowly, organically.”

Turns out most of the cast is made of his friends and volunteers via his myspace. A truly indie production.

Editors live at Jimmy Kimmel Live

Editors at Jimmy Kimmel live 7/25/07

Last night myself along with hundreds of others ventured out to catch the Editors live on the Jimmy Kimmel live show. Besides the waiting around for a little while I’ve come to really appreciate tv show concerts. It’s all such high production. Everything sounded awesome to begin with and you gotta love when there is a grip of lights shining all over the place. They played the goods from their latest album An End Has A Start as well as tracks off of The Back Room. I forgot how cool these guys are live. Nothing special, just playing and playing well. I think it’s actually just Tom Smith’s voice that make them so unique. Such powerful and clear vocals… it just sounds so good. They played for about 30 minutes maybe and it was totally worth it. Free high quality show of the Editors made Wednesday so completely worth it.

After that ended at like 9:30 some friends and I hit up the the Good Luck Bar which is now one of my new go-to places. Awesome place… it was especially nice since it was only Wednesday and not over crowded.

For more of the Editors… just search.
*Apologies for the crappy photo… they don’t allow camera’s so cam phone pics will do.

Daft Punk live - LA Sports Arena

Review: Daft Punk / Ratatat / Sebastian & Kavinsky
July 21, 2007 Los Angeles Sports Arena

Well now that I’m finally back to writing after a hectic weekend, lets talk about Daft Punk. First of all the concert was completely sold out - the whole place packed and a giant sweat box. There really isn’t any reason to call it a concert, it was more like the biggest dance party I’ve ever been too. I think probably like 15,000 people or so… 90% of them dancing. I was only able to get concourse tickets and it was amazing to just watch the people on the floor always moving. Everybody nodding their head right fist pumping. My view as you can tell from the terrible treo pic above that I could see practically everything. Direct angle view of the stage and screen closest to me plus a view of all that was happening on the floor. It was just a sea of people moving and swaying… lighters, cell phones, glow sticks all in the air simultaneously to the beat.

The intensity of the show grew song by song as well the visualizations. They controlled each one of our movements so methodically through lights and sounds. The line of lights above the floor (pictured above) blew my mind and everybody else’s when they first turned on. It was so unexpected and I had never seen anything like that before. I can’t even describe the stage to you… everything was an LCD screen or LED light of some sort.

To be honest… I’m at a loss for words. What I’m thinking and feeling about the show is far beyond what I’ve ever experienced at a concert before. LAist has a great review you can read here. [vids on youtube here]

As I was sitting in the parking lot after the show with friends we dissected the night and how amazing that hour and a half was. One of the main things that made our heads explode was the songs. They didn’t play any one of their tracks in any way you have ever heard it. They were constantly mixing 2,3,4 songs together to create completely new tracks all together that got everybody into a sweaty dance rager.

So intense. So amazing.
It’ll be hard to see a concert as sick as this was ever again.

Lets talk about Ratatat and Sebastian & Kavinsky for just a few sentences.
Ratatat was absolutely sick. They played all the good songs like my personal favorite “El Pico” and an awesome version of “Gettysburg.” They had some artsy videos running in the background that were synced with the music. Most notable was the perspective of you inside a car driving and a dude on the passenger side outside the car that smashes the front window in with a bat. Perfectly in sync with the beat that just made me want to rage more. Sebastian & Kavinsky are some really talented dj’s. They got the crowd dancing in between sets with some unique mixes.

In closing… one of the most amazing experiences… I should go pickup their new dvd and relive the times.

You know Steve Albini right? He’s said to be many things, mostly known as the producer / recording engineer for indie music. Not the ‘indie’ that’s thrown around today per se but that’s a whole different topic. Over on the 2+2 Poker forums there is a thread of him answering pretty much any question you ask. It’s a long thread and I’ve read about a quarter of it. There is alot of cool to know info in there straight from the man himself. I think it’s funny he titled the thread “micro” celebrity. In the scene he’s huge but I suppose micro in the grand view of a “celebrity.”

Found via Waxy Links which I read everyday and I used to wander the 2+2 forums alot until I ran out of money and time to play poker.

Go! Motion

written by: DAN
Go Motion

These days bands are sprouting up in the rock electronica style pumping out track after track then gets you dancing. Go! Motion deserves it’s piece of the pie. Go! Motion is four guys from Nebraska who just released their debut album (i think debut) Kill The Love. I’ve listened to it many a time and always all the way through. I can’t skip any of the tracks because they are all just that good. Reminds me heavily of The Cure both vocally and instrumentals which is cool by me… I mean who doesn’t like The Cure?

These guys have been touring the past couple months and just finished out yesterday here in LA. They have the potential and people are really into this style of music right now so we’ll see what happens next.
