I saw La Rocca last night at the Hotel Cafe in Hollywood. They owned that little stage as the swankest of rockers. Sharing a bottle of wine on stage, the lead singer Bjorn Baillie shaking hands of the audience thanking them for coming out. They started out with “Sketches (20 Something Life)” and went through every song on their latest release, The Truth. I wasn’t keeping track, but they said they decided to play every song even though it was kind of foolish. I along with the rest of the crowd was into the 45 minute set or so. One thing about their music that I never really payed attention until I saw them last night was the keyboard. When listening (not live) the keyboard was just kind of background depth; live you see Nick Haworth rocking out on both the keys and guitar in some songs. Awesome energy, great show overall.
Now it’s story time. This is one of those ‘Oh, that was the band’ stories. I found a parking spot in Hollywood around 8:15 or so and they were supposed to go on at 9:00 ish. I decide to wander Amoeba for a bit, then on my way out pass a couple of really tall guys. Looked like they were ready to go out and for a split second wondered what else was going on. I start my walk a block or so to the Hotel Cafe, at the crosswalk to cross the street, there is the two guys again. I wondered if they were heading to the La Rocca show. Turns out they were – they walked down the ally to the side entrance as I made a quick call. I’m sure you know where this story is going, but those two guys were Alan Redmond (drums) and Nick Haworth. (keys) As soon as I saw them go up on stage, I thought – well there is something going on tonight. That is the end of my predictable story, hope you enjoyed for a minute.
