Home furniture can be complemented by the use of occasional furniture and accent pieces. Although most will initially furnish their home with the accepted tables, chairs, display cabinets, sofas and the like, a time will come when that seems just a little plain. Something seems lacking, and that is when you will turn to individual items of occasional furniture and other accent pieces.
Every room needs seating of one form or another. Lounges will often uses sofas or settees but these are space hungry and inflexible items of furniture. In a small room they consume all the space, making it difficult for people to move around behind the sofas. Ironically in a very large room a sofa or even a couple of large settees can look badly out of place, because there is just so much room outside the space enclosed by the sofas.
When people think of the term 'occasional tables' they immediately think of coffee tables - as though there were no other type of occasional table. In fact, there are many different types ranging from drop-leaf and other extendable designs to those fitted with drawers, those designed to go with fire pits and lemonade stands to mention just a few of the possibilities.
Before you start shopping around you have to find where you want to place the occasional chair. Walk into the room and choose a focal point. If it's the bedroom then the bed is your focal point, in the living room it's your dining table and in your office it's your work desk.
