Maybe you’re like “Uhhhh wtf?” or maybe you’re like “Uhhhh sweet” when you think of Duran Duran but I’m more like later. Every now and then like here and here I like to throw in older stuff on this site. Sometimes all the new “indie” and rock music gets a little too much so it’s always good to look back. Duran Duran had their fill in the 80’s and then the early 90’s when I started listening to them. The band was first somewhat of a band in 1978 and officially formed in 1981. Songs like “Hungry Like a Wolf,” “Girls on Film,” “The Reflex,” “Ordinary World,” and a slew of topped the both the U.K and U.S charts. One of my favorite songs in my of all time category is definitely “Come Undone.” Honestly my friends and I used to listen to that song everyday on repeat. It was the song when I was like eleventeen years old.
In reality there is nothing I could write about Duran Duran that you can’t find out for yourself. They are one of those bands that hit the 80’s synth pop scene hard and fast and rode it into the 90’s. I actually decided to write this post cause I heard they are going to release an album this year. Sure enough after consulting the book of knowledge it looks like they will be releasing one in /around May. I’m a wee bit tickled by this but honestly I think it’s gonna be tough to be good. They aren’t Depeche Mode who continues to release good albums all the way up until 2006. I guess only time will tell.
Anyways, here’s a couple radio favorites. Go ahead and enjoy the 80’s again for a minute or two.

I’m disappointed that Duran Duran still haven’t gotten the amount of critical praise they should have been getting for at least the past fifteen years. But I guess people want consciously self-important music to make them feel as though they’re being intelligent.
I’ll be writing more at length about that on my blog as soon as possible. I’ve already written three blog entries that I’m considering a sort of rebuke to the tired cliches brought up about the band. I’m hoping it’ll get some attention.

Duran Duran is the greatest band that was ever conceived. Ground breakers in all aspects of music, video, looks, fashion, lyrics, they will ALWAYS be remembered as the band at the top of their game. Everyone knows that Duran Duran is the king of all the bands of the 80’s. They’re not like the Backstreet Boys or InSync that are not talented enough to play their own instruments. Duran Duran is not a contrived band by management, and actually PLAYED and still do play their own instruments. When you get into Duran Duran (and I do mean get into them), it’s so easy to become hypnotically entralled by the sexual-night-romantic-mysterious-fatal attraction edge that the band exudes. And, although the band unfortunately hasn’t been given the full credit it truly deserves, everyone, without a shadow, associates Duran Duran as the band of the 80’s. Clearly, the contributions that Duran Duran made in the past 25 years of its existence is something that should be at the center of each serious discussion of music’s greatest and firsts in music history. Without the musical and videographical innovation and superior talent of Duran Duran, the world of music would have lagged in great respects and would have had to suffer a difficult time of catching up to where it is today. Duran Duran is without question la crème de la crème of the 80’s.

Well, it looks as though Duran have made the decision to sell out in a way that I never thought they would. They’ve decided to hook up with Hip-Hip hacks Justin Timberlake and Timbaland to produce their new album. I have heard their new song, which is a considerable disappointment. I guess Duran are more interested in selling millions of records to kids who don’t even remember Duran from their heyday. The fact that they are letting someone else produce their newest album means one of two things: 1) The record company demanded it or 2) They have completely lost their minds. This album may sell well to the masses for a moment or two, but in the end, they’ll wind up right back where they are now. Why don’t they put their time to some good use and spend another year putting together a record they will be proud of? Looking at their fine, fine, fine website though, methinks the boys are hurting for Cash. You can’t even post in their forums without paying some bucks to join their community! This is really an insult to fans who have bought their records, CDs, tickets to concerts and merchandise over the decades, but hey, who is this new record geared to anyways…? Thats right… those kids who weren’t even born when Duran were formed!

Unfortunately, I must agree with threerandot and accept his comment. It’s sad seeing Duran Duran reduced to producing albums to either appease to management’s money-hungry whims or to try so hard to get noticed by the younger generation - through management-planned artists like timberlake. Either way, their departure from what they’re supposed to be good at is a departure from their true talent in what they can potentially create. They’ve got the magic, but they’re not tapping into it. I’ve said this before and I’ll say it again… Duran Duran still has the potential of reaching the top again. What they need is a serious makeover: their hot look again redefined, sex-assasination appeal in looks, persona, clothes, style, sound and lyrics, and their willingness to unwaver from that identity. If Duran can manifest those elements into their being, I have no doubt that it can once again re-emerge. For this to happen, it must make a STRONG concerted effort to bring this about. It’s life-changing, if you think about it. Importantly, their looks are directly correlated to their ability to produce great music. That’s something Duran must consider greatly. If I were their manager, I would make damn sure they do everything necessary to get them where they have to go. There is no room for complacency in my book.
