I first heard At The Drive In in 2003, my first year of college. I think this was right about the time they has already split up to go onto their seperate projects. They split into two other groups, The Mars Volta, and Sparta. Arguably The Mars Volta (Cedric, vocal for ATDI went here) is more popular than Sparta, yet both great bands. At the Drive In has everything great about both bands into one. The experimental kinda crazy rock along with equally obscure lyrics (The Mars Volta) yet also the catchy alternative rock sounds. (Sparta) Thus I generally listen to At The Drive In more than The Mars Volta or Sparta. Especially what I think is their best album (and yes I have them all, even some rare stuff) would be Relationship of Command. Every single song is good in it’s own unique way, and seriously the lyrics trip me out. Example - Invalid Litter Dept. oh, and well pick any from the list. They may trip me out, but I really like every word, especially phrases that you would not normally here. There songs ooze with creative open interpretation that hook you in and give you mental pictures throughout each song.
Listen to some songs, you may love, you may not. I guess you could throw them into the genre of punk, alternative, experimental rock. I can’t really compare them to anybody except their offshoots, The Mars Volta and Sparta. If you like either of those and want to get to their roots, listen to At The Drive In.

but like i was sayin
At the Drive-In is incredible
they need to get back together
I don’t like Sparta much (even though the new cd is pretty good)
The Mars Volta though is pretty amazing
i think televators is like my theme song now
i’m actually listenin to it right now
Cedrix Bixler-Zavala has the greatest voice
and Omar Rodriguez-Lopez is the most amazing guitar player I’ve heard in this time and age
above all i think that At The Drive-In has come a long way and is an extreme influence on me.
:]

at the drive-in is amazing. i have this ongoing debate with my friend about which is better: ATDI, or the mars volta. i love the technicality of the mars volta, but they don’t really reproduce it live. ATDI is part madman, part jam-band, very organic and its complexity comes across in live performances. the mars volta just sounds like crap live. but who cares? i think listening to the mars volta is a more interesting, deeper experience. love em both, and yes, omar is the greatest guitar player i’ve heard in our generation. thank GOD for music (they make you think).
