MUSICGLOB HOME

It’s now story time from last night.
Start off by heading to Spaceland and get their a little bit into the Hour of the Shipwreck set. Very different/experimental/unique. I guess the only band I can think of right now to relate them with would be Deerhoof. I think the more you listen, the more you understand. They played a good set, then onto the band Holy Shit. This is almost too easy, but holy shit I was disappointed. I’m not usually one to write about when a band sucks, but I was just fed up. They took forever to setup, the lead singer was chewing gum both during sound check and while singing, then when they finally start, well I left. I went and closed out my tab and left right as they started their second song. The only thing that cheered me up was that the hotdog stand was outside and I can’t pass up a bacon wrapped hotdog death with everything on it.

So we head over to the the echo next for Hell Ya! Got there just in time for eskimohunter to go on. This is my second or third time seeing them live, and I really like them. I have yet to listen to anything on their myspace or mp3′s floating around – yet they are a great live band.

After chatting with some people and hanging out, The Sugi Tap went on. Earlier in the night, my friend Joe mentions that the lead singer from Eve 6 is wondering around. WHAAAT?! Turns out Tony and Max from Eve 6 made a new band. Great alternative stuff, they played a good set that a few dedicated fans were totally into. By dedicated fans, they knew all the words and were way into it. Gotta love that. For more on bands at Hell Ya last night, head here.

Overall, the night was at first full of shit, then turned around right about when I ate that hotdog and it then became a good night. That magical bacon wrapped hotdog with grilled onions, mustard, mayo, and ketchup. It’s 10:45 AM, yet I really want some of that artery clogging goodness right now.

On one final note, if I dropped by the Silverlake lounge I would have been a super echo park hipster. Add on Short Stop or Little Joy and call yourself hipster god.

WOXY still alive

written by: DAN
WOXY.COM

I havn’t really talked about the subject of WOXY.com annoucing they were shutting their doors because it was simply too sad. Yet now the doors being thrown wide open. A bulletin posted on the frontpage of their website yesterday…

Could it be true? Does lightning strike the same place twice? Apparently it does. It is indeed the real deal — WOXY.com will be back on-the-air soon and better than ever! Seems like we’re proving ourselves to be master escape artists in eluding the icy depths of the deadpool. We’re ready to kick out the jams and hope you are, too. In the meantime, please do join us on the boards, and if you haven’t done so already, make sure you sign up for our email list to the right.

More details very, very soon…

Today is a good Friday indeed.

The Rapture – Get Myself Into It video

written by: DAN

I like The Rapture and I also like roller skating. I havn’t gone in like 10 years. Remember bladers? I had a sick set of blades. More on The Rapture later.

Or how about this, you tell me about the Rapture. Some people love to hate them, others just love them. Me? I already said I like them, but in reality – only in moderation.

Boy Kill Boy

written by: DAN
Boy Kill Boy

I know that their album came out a bit ago, but I keep forgetting to write about these guys. What to say what to say… well for starters they are a UK band, and if you read this blog often you know that I’m a fan of foreign bands. Lately it’s been Australian bands like Van She and The Presets. Now it’s time for some more UK bands.

I don’t really know who to relate with Boy Kill Boy, maybe if anybody the Editors because of Chris’s powerful vocals. You would also like if you like The Futureheads. Every song on the album is rock, yet dance-able at the same time. Perfect party music.

Right now Boy Kill Boy is touring all over, check them out I bet they would be a great band to see live.

The Oohlas

Today The Oohlas release Best Stop Pop, an incredibly fun indie pop album. I don’t really know if indie pop is even anything, but why not. This Los Angeles based trio put together a fun album for any listening occasion. On a side note, I just like to say their name out loud, you should try it out. OOOOhlaaaaasss.

Anyways, big record release party tonight at Cinespace sponsored by PINK IS THE NEW BLOG. If you don’t read Trents celebrity gossip blog, you should. I’ll be there, it’s 21 + and FREE!!

8mm

8mm

This is a band that I’ve been holding onto for awhile now. 8mm is husband – wife combo Sean and Juliette Beavan from Los Angeles CA. Songs to Love & Die By is their debut album and is simply beautiful. The album really is filled with songs to love and die by. It’s a combination of somber and seductive love songs that slip into your head and fill you with emotion. Sean is no newbie to the music industry. He has mixed/produced records by Nine Inch Nails, No Doubt, Thrice, and Marilyn Manson to name a few.

The album comes out tomorrow, and it is simply an addictive, beautiful album. Make sure to listen to the mp3′s below, especially “Stunning.”

Brandon Flowers JANE interview

written by: DAN
Brandon Flowers JANE interview

For all the Brandon Flowers and Killers fans, here is the clipping of his five question interview in October’s JANE magazine. I’ve had it in my inbox for a couple days now and forgot to share with you.
You can click the above photo to read yourself, or here is the five questions and Flowers answers.

The Same 5 Questions We Always Ask: Brandon Flowers JANE, October 2006
1: Where’s the craziest place you’ve ever had sex?
A rental car in Savannah, Georgia. In the middle of touring. I have a problem with flying, so instead of going home, my wife came to me and we rented a car and drove around. Just pulled off some dirt roads…

2: What word makes you cringe when you hear it?
Artist. Just shoot me if I ever refer to myself as an artist. Call me “rocket man” instead.

3: What do you think happens when you die?
I believe that we live on. Maybe this body dies, but I think you get a new one. I look at the trees and the sun, the air and the water. Everything is just too perfect, right down to our digestive system.

4: When was the last time you pulled and all-nighter?
Back in Longon, when we were finishing Sams’ Town. Normally, I like to sleep, but we stayed in the studio until 4 or 5 a.m. You’ve already gone that far, so you take it to the next level. We ended up in a dungeon. This guy we know has an incredible house with a room underneath it that was built hundreds of years ago. He made it into a wine cellar and a theater. We were hanging on the chandeliers.

5: If you were invisible for one day and could spy on a famous person, who would it be?
Tom Cruise? I love him, but he’s getting so strange and no one really knows what this Scientology thing is all about. So I would be the one to deliver the news.

Kind of an odd set of questions, but hey I guess you can do that when you are a magazine. Who am I to judge?! There is also a bit more to read when you view the larger version of the scan. Head to the comments to read related articles.

The Presets live, again

written by: DAN
The Presets
Live photos from Cinespace show April 06

I went out to Spaceland last night to see The Presets at Club NME which is the usual Wednesday night gig. The Presets are one of the best bands to see live. I kid you not, every show turns into a dance party. They come out and just party and get you moving. It’s so much fun, and if you don’t dance, then I recommend drinking more. If you don’t drink, get into the music, it’s really not hard with The Presets. They were mixing up all kinds of stuff, they even threw in some daft punk that really got everybody pumped up. Then there was “THE LAST 20 SECONDS” that Julian shouted out then everybody was going crazy. Such an amazing show.

They are touring all through October and November all over the place. Check the schedule on their myspace.

For mp3′s and more stuff, head to their post in the MusicGlob archives.

Mezzanine Owls

written by: DAN
Mezzanine Owls

I’ve been reading more and more recently about the Mezzanine Owls and how everybody loves them. It’s all true. The Mezzanine Owls are an LA band that finished up recording their debut album Slingshot Echos which I think will be set for release later this year. You could call it shoegaze, some pop, but really just always worth listening. Reminds me a bit of another LA band, Silversun Pickups. and too many other things. I first heard of them via The TripWire who has some great words about the album and the band.

AFI Live

written by: DAN
AFI A Fire Inside Live

I thought I’d write this up before I forget, as I mentioned before I made it out to the AFI show Friday (9/15) night at the Long Beach Arena. Where do I start… well I started off by not knowing where to go and parked forever away, yet it turns out I saved a few bucks in the process. Then I didn’t really know where to get into the arena at first because the whole place is such a hudge hodgepodge event/convention spaces. After a bit of walking, I finally made it in probably about 9:30 ish and missed Saosin. I was alittle perterbed, especially when I realized there was 5 minutes left to buy beer. So I decided to just head to the floor and enjoy the show.

The band was clad in white like the above photo, with a pretty elaborate stage setup. I don’t know any AFI songs except for the few on the radio that everybody loves. They also played a couple songs that mainly the hardcore fans knew, some song from 1997 that lead vocalist Davey Havok mentioned. If I remeber correctly, “Miss Murder” was their last song and it was a great song to go out on. They were really into the crowd and the fans which I appreciated, specifically Havok thanking the crowd multiple times. He mentioned this show was the largest headlining show to date and thanked everybody for their support. Towards the end of the 2 hour set he jumped into the crowd and had them holding him up while singing. Pretty epic with camera’s recording the whole concert.

Overall, I may not be into their music or style – yet they played a great show. They are into their fans and puting on a great show and they did just that.

Banksy Painted Elephant

written by: DAN

Not really music related – yet music and art are hand in hand sometimes. Banksy, the same artist I mentioned earlier that “modified” Paris Hiltons albums was in LA this past weekend. Guess what, he did something that everybody is fussing about – this painted elephant. After reading how people have been upset, I don’t think it’s a dispute over painting an elephant is bad or not; yet rather that he did something that has a lasting discussion. Have you ever seen a painted elephant? I havn’t and it sure is spectacular looking.

Tell me your thoughts, and read the LA Times article.

Roger O’Donnell

Roger O'Donnell

This past week I caught up with emails and news and whatnot from when I was gone of vacation; I suppose that’s good so I can continue blogging for you and only you. Soo, do you know who Roger O’Donnell is? If yes, he would be the keyboardist for The Cure. Wait, never heard of The Cure – you are probably eleventeen, so go get some. If you answered “no” above – I guess I just told you. Sorry, enough incessant blabbering… Roger O’Donnell is releasing a whole album that he just made with his Moog Voyager. Other artists are getting some inspiration from Roberts work and remixing themself. It’s all beautiful and exciting.

Ben Swift

written by: DAN

New artist (to me) that just went solo. Introducing Ben Swift. He released his solo album, Pull earlier this year that he put together in his studio in Western Massachusetts. Calm and compelling – you know, the usual acoustic stuff. You will like if a fan of Gus Black, David Ford, Kevin Devine, maybe even some James Blunt or Jack Johnson…

Great track, pick it up and listen. Sorry I don’t have much more info on him, hard to find!
